Routing A Link to the Past No Logic earlygame
Boats and Blogs » Devlog
The goal of this guide is to help you with two things:
- Direct you to learn things that are useful more often (in every seed or multiple times throughout a seed)
- Help you finish seeds more quickly if you want (in my opinion, playing for time makes things a bit more interesting).
Early game
Early game you have two goals:
- Get as many items as possible
- Clear out locations which won't get easier/faster with additional items (now is the time to do them, when you don't have anything)
Below is a typical early game route. Plenty of variations are possible, but generally you'll want to check these places early on.
Lost Woods + Death Mountain Ascent
- Timing: Death Mountain unlocks a lot, and the graveyard ledge grants bombs + Houlihan money. So you want to do this pretty early. If you wait a bit you might get glove or lamp, but don't wait too long.
- Sanctuary start
- Check bonk rocks west of Sanctuary
- Go to Lost Woods and pull tree to see what consumables you get
- Get north item. Can skip it if it's bad
- Fall down secret hole and get item
- Exit south, go right, and do New Death Mountain Ascent to skip glove
- (Leaf on the right doing this with input display)
- If you're brand new, this is a simpler Death Mountain Ascent, and it's barely slower. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rsHiTdt7Zs
- Alternatively, you can also exit Lost Woods north/right + do Lumberjack DMA instead. https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Lumberjack-Death-Mountain-Ascent-pt1
- This lets you check a bush crab + lumberjack ledge + spectacle rock on the way, but like the easier DMA, you have to go backwards through the dark room to reach the old man before doing the dark room movement below.
- Dark room navigation to save old man (practice with lamp first. If you're doing one of the easier DMAs, you'll need to follow these steps backwards to reach the old man, then forwards to the top):
- Go straight up to jump ledge.
- Move up, right, down, diagonal up/right to reach the old man. You can use the boots to kick up dust and kind of see where you are.
- Hold right to go through door.
- Switch to down+right to dodge hole. After a while switch to right.
- Tap A repeatedly to kick up dust and see Link scroll to the right and grab the wall. Move a bit left to be aligned with the gap between the bats.
- Hold down until you hear bats fly. Switch to down+left.
- After walking a bit, switch to down to exit.
- Take the old man to the cave to get an item and a third useful start location.
- If you die at any point in this process, you can save and continue to respawn at the old man's start location (you don't have to do DMA again in order to get multiple tries at delivering the old man to the top).
- Clip south to graveyard ledge (there are multiple ways to do this) https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Graveyard-Ledge-teleport Farm bombs and get item.
- The clip to graveyard ledge sets the camera up for Houlihan room (225 rupees). Jump down to graveyard, go right, get rid of bush and slip + fall in (don't run directly into the middle, make sure to slip? I think that might matter sometimes).
- You should land in a room with rupees. After exiting, you will be outside Link's house and can continue your route from there.
- The clip to graveyard ledge sets the camera up for Houlihan room (225 rupees). Jump down to graveyard, go right, get rid of bush and slip + fall in (don't run directly into the middle, make sure to slip? I think that might matter sometimes).
Water checks
- Timing:
- Doing these first can be nice, because you have to do them differently if you have flippers.
- Weak reasons for waiting: some items can make it easier to do Zora ledge clip (if the item is good), and King Zora 500 rupee item can become an option (not a great one. Money can be tight in No Logic).
- Link’s house start
- Go east and south; jump in water to scout island item (can get from Link’s house any time if it’s good, using an auto walk) https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Hylia-Island-teleport
- Go back to river and clip + fake flippers to under bridge https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Flipperless-Hobo
- https://othertom.club/glitches/overworld_major/hobo_fakeflippers_direct.mp4
- If you're brand new to glitches, you can optionally set up fake flipper more easily on a different screen and swim over to the bridge, or just leave this guy for later.
- To get out from under the bridge, line up on the bottom of the pillar and go about 2 pixels down, then jump to the right. You will fake flipper on the transition.
- Swim clip to ice rod cave
(if you're having trouble, you can go around and open the entrance with a bomb as normal)- Another setup that may work better for you:
- Start in the same place as the video, treading water.
- Hold right, tap A and immediately let go of the dpad
- Wait around 1/4th of a second and then input down -> right quickly. You don't necessarily have to hit the diagonal.
- Tread water, then hold right and mash swim. If it worked, you'll start swimming through the wall.
- If speed is slow, keep mashing swim and release forward > wait for speedup > repress forward.
- Try to enter ice rod cave near the center. You may have trouble exiting otherwise.
- Swim near the pit to begin walking again.
- Small optimization: bonk the chest to splash back to the entrance.
- Exit the cave by dashing and brushing the doorframe to arm waterwalk.
- If you get stuck in the cave exit, go back in and come out again to try to get unstuck.
- Another setup that may work better for you:
- Go down a screen and jump off the left side of the ledge to waterwalk to the whirlpool to waterfall fairy (chests behind the waterfall).
- If you want to come back here later, you can arm water walk in any other cave. Mini moldorm cave is a good one.
- Walk over (not touching any land) to scout zora ledge. If the item is good, there are a few ways to clip up and get it. Most are tricky if you don't have a weapon to fend off the Zoras. https://othertom.club/glitches/overworld_major/zora_ledge_boots_faster.mp4
- You can always leave this check for later and come back with more stuff + (optionally) 500 rupees for King Zora, who is nearby.
South shore checks
- Timing: just need bombs. But a weapon makes it a lot nicer.
- Link’s house start
- Dam (2 items)
- Mini moldorm cave. You can check a bush crab on the way to see what they drop.
- Juke to king's tomb.
- JD on the right doing it with inputs
- Line up on wall, facing wall
- Get sword out, move over to door with sword out, release sword
- Place bomb, walk deep into door, turn around, pick up bomb, tap out of door to snap, wait for explosion.
- Dash turn into door
- Place bomb. Select buffer into door two pixels.
- Unpause, pick up bomb. Tap out of door. Throw bomb. Select buffer into door two pixels (can use bomb movement to see how many frames have advanced).
- Unpause. Hold out of door, done (you should be at the top of the screen and transition up).
- Note: you will not be able to see what item you got. You will need to check the HUD, item menu, or an autotracker.
- If you used bombs to kill moldorms, then you probably won't have many left over, and you may be low on health. You can skip the bomb juke and instead later skip the mitt requirement for King's Tomb by jumping down from Death Mountain.
- JD on the right doing it with inputs
Death Mountain checks
- Timing:
- Spiral cave is much easier with a weapon. It's somewhat recommended to have one, but not required.
- Old man cave start
- Clip (or walk) to Tower of Hera and get the first two chests, then leave
- If you haven't already scouted the items on top of and inside Spectacle Rock, now is a good time to do so.
- Clip to East Death Mountain. https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-EDM-land-bridge-teleport
- Scout floating island and get the item if it's good.
- Spiral cave
- Paradox cave
Kakariko vilage + Desert Palace
- Timing:
- Many glitchless routes go to Kakariko first.
- No Logic has more options, and most of the other options can be completely cleared out in one trip with no items, while Kakariko can't (quite).
- Racers often delay Kakariko until they can clear out more of Kakariko and Desert in one trip
- Items that they're waiting for are:
- For Kakariko: 100 rupees, a bottle, powder (for magic bat, skipping hammer), flute
- For Desert: Cane of Somaria, bottle, big key, glove, book+sword (for tablet).
- You certainly don't need all of these, but the more you have, the more stuff you can check while you're here.
- Items that they're waiting for are:
- A ton of items in Kakariko+Desert have no item requirements though, so you can also just go here whenever you want. Don't put it off for too long; there are a lot of free items here.
- Sanctuary start. Get bonk rocks chest if you haven't.
- If you need bombs, you can farm them on the bonk rocks next to the Fortune Teller and enter + exit the building to respawn them. You'll need 3 for the items, and a 4th to farm full bombs in the village. Alternatively, you can buy bombs from the store.
- Blind's hut/chicken hut/well/back of tavern (no item requirements for these 4 (except bombs))
- If going to bat cave with just powder and magic https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Magic-Bat-screenwrap-transition
- If you have mushroom and Cane of Somaria, you can fake powder. You can also fake powder with powder + cane if your magic is empty.
- Bottle vendor (requires 100 rupees) and sick kid (requires bottle)
- This is a bit niche, but FYI if you have a bottle with a good bee in it, release it near the vendor and he will give you 100 rupees.
- Farm bombs in the bombable hut if you want.
- Library and race game (note: you don't actually have to do the race game. You can teleport from the ledge below).
- Clip to Desert. https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=LW&glitch=ndg-Desert-teleport Check the ledge item, and go in the side of the palace to get the two free checks.
- You can do more, but it depends on what items you have. Three common choices are listed here, but you can also potentially go to Swamp, defeat the boss, and more.
- If you have a bottle, it's common to do a door glitch to Thieves Town attic and get the chest + bomb the floor for later. You can then come back https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=EG1&glitch=ndg-TT-to-DP-Right-Clip and get the two chests on right side desert.
- With Somaria you bomb the attic, then go downstairs in TT, take the key, die on the spikes and use the key in Desert to open the right side door.
- The cane messes up north/south door transitions. That's why you can't come back in the same way as the bottle method (but that open desert door can now be used to get to Swamp if desired).
- P.S. With the bottle method, you have to go down to hit a switch first, so you need to use the key in Thieves to get back up.
- If you have 0 items, you can still check the desert right side with a quadrant glitch. https://glitchmaps.mfns.dev/?map=EG1&glitch=dg-DP-Right-Quadrant-Glitch
- You can leave and do the desert overworld checks. Aginah and cave 45 are free. Checkerboard requires glove, and tablet requires book + sword.
You may have noticed that the decision making got more complicated near the bottom of the list: "if you have X then you can go to Y, but if you have Z then instead you can..." Welcome to midgame :) (you can keep it simple and ignore a lot of the complexity if you want; it's just to keep things interesting as you play over and over.)
